Accessibility
GradeGuide is built to be usable by every student, including those who navigate by keyboard, screen reader, magnification, or with reduced motion.
Our target
We target WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the standard referenced by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and by accessibility legislation in other Canadian provinces.
What we have verified
- Colour contrast. Every text and interface element across the marketing site and the student app has been measured against the surface it actually renders on, at both mobile and desktop layouts, and meets the 4.5:1 (text) and 3:1 (large text, interface components) thresholds.
- Keyboard access. Every control is a native button or link and is reachable and operable by keyboard. A "Skip to main content" link bypasses repeated navigation. The mobile menu keeps focus inside itself while open and returns focus to the button that opened it.
- Screen readers. Headings follow a correct hierarchy, navigation exposes the current page, icon-only controls carry accessible names, toggles expose their pressed state, and the AI advisor announces replies as they stream in.
- Forms. Every field has an associated label, and validation errors are linked to the field they belong to.
- Reduced motion. Animation and smooth scrolling are disabled for anyone whose system requests reduced motion.
- Zoom and reflow. Pinch-zoom is never disabled, and layouts reflow to narrow viewports without horizontal scrolling.
Known limitations
We would rather name these than imply the product is flawless:
- Card collections on some screens are not yet marked up as lists, so screen readers do not announce an item count for them.
- Reflow and text-spacing behaviour has been reviewed structurally but not yet confirmed on physical devices at the narrowest sizes.
- The product has not yet been tested with users who rely on assistive technology. Automated and manual auditing is not a substitute for that, and it is the next thing we intend to do.
